How to Choose a Career Path That You Love (in 5 Easy Steps)

Choosing the right career path can be difficult, especially when you have no idea what you want to do. And when you are young, the daunting task of trying to plan ahead can even seem a little scary at times.

But one thing that you have to remember is that once you start working, you will be spending a majority of your time doing your job. And if you don’t like what you do for a living, then the likelihood is, you are on the wrong career path.

But never fear, there are a number of steps that you can take which will help you decide which career path is right for you.

1. Take the Time in Getting to Know Yourself

This first step is extremely important. If you don’t know yourself, then how would you know what is the right career path for you?

By taking the time in knowing yourself, you will become familiar with your strengths and your weaknesses. But the trick is to focus on your strengths. Your strengths are a sign to show you what you love doing. Your strengths will naturally arise when you are under pressure. So think about for a bit, the last time you were under pressure, where did you excel?

2. Know What Your Interests & Hobbies Are

It is a true saying that by having a career that you love, it will not feel like “work” at all. That is because you have a strong passion about what you are doing. And the same goes for knowing what your interests and hobbies are.

When you have an interest or a hobby, you are naturally drawn to it. And you are willing to commit time and effort to master your interest or hobby.

3. Note Down Your Goals, Dreams & Ambitions

You should never be afraid of having dreams and ambitions. Never. Having dreams and ambitions will give you a good idea of where you want to be.

There is a really good book called “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehno. It tells an inspiring story of a young shepherd who follows his dream and his eventually finds his own destiny. I highly recommend that you read it!

Having dreams is good; it will help you find your path to success. Even the great Martin Luther King had a dream, his vision help inspired America to take the first step on the road to equality.

4. Look For Jobs That Are Best Suited to You

Once you know your dreams, interest/hobbies and more importantly, yourself. Then you would need to discover a career path that is right for you and goes well with your dreams, interests and what you like doing.

For example, if you enjoy writing and socialising, then a career in journalism may be suited for you. Another example, if you like fixing things and enjoy being practical then a career as an engineer might be for you.

This is will take time though, so it is best advised to explore all your options.

5. Take Action and Be Confident

As the old saying goes, “actions speaks louder than words.” By developing a plan of action, you are establishing a clear sense of direction for you to pursue your dream career.

But more importantly, you need to be confident in yourself. Stay positive about your situation, and take each day as it comes.
