Spotting signs of abuse is a vital skill. When caring for service users in supported housing, realising the signs early will help put an end to the abuse as quickly as possible. Below are various tips and things to look for:
Signs of abuse could include things such as;
- changes in behaviour – if the person has become withdrawn, moody, angry or depressed, perhaps suddenly or for long periods of time.
- changes in appearance/Hygiene – if the person seems to be wearing the same clothes, not washing his or her hair refraining from putting on make-up, or general self neglect.
- changes in lifestyle, routine or circumstances – for example the person may stop going out or socialising, refuse to let visitors in.
- Regularly occurring injuries – black eyes, bruises or cuts.
- unusual difficulty with finances – unpaid bills or debts building up or saying they cannot afford things they could previously.
- an over-emphasis on everything being normal and that nothing being wrong.
- seeking attention from numerous people – they may feel safer when other people are around.
- appearing to be frightened when a certain person comes into the room or is mentioned.
- appearing to be off their food and losing weight.
